“Catching Fred’s eye, he nodded twice in her direction. Violet swallowed down her fury as she took a seat next to the man and brought her drink to her lips. The man watched her every move.

“I’m glad you came back.” His breath, laced with alcohol, washed over Violet.

“So am I.” She smiled sweetly, leaning towards him. “Oops!” She sloshed some of the brown liquid over his linen shirt.

Reeling back, he used his handkerchief to pat the damp patches, as Fred switched Violet’s drink for a new glass he’d poured.

“I’m so sorry.” Violet gushed.

The man had taken on a red glow to his face but remained calm. “It’s quite alright. Accidents happen.” He dabbed at his coat a final time before glancing back at Violet. “Now, where were we?"
